This sock has 3 of my favourite things: cables, lace, and contrasting toes and heels. Designing it and knitting it made me happy. This yarn is beautiful and working with it makes me happy. Looking at the finished sock makes me happy and I hope when you knit them and wear them, they make you feel happy.<br />

Sometimes in life we need be passionately goal driven and hyper focused on making things happen and other times we need to sit back, relax, embrace what life puts in front of us, trust our instincts and see where that energy takes us.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Sometimes in knitting you need a sock that tests all of your skills and levels you up as a knitter and other times you need a beautifully simple and meditative sock that lets you enjoy the process and see where the yarn takes you; this is that sock.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGFiRo6h9XZpW9pkYvmsefy8RmX7MfBqLMqA-JRVKATT6COS-d5457t6hD08nI1rjd885ayGKVSzeY1Q2QMvp5iU9LnAs0ZLORCY9hP9fDYEjPbF9e-ywOFcUTPgmtJ-q1VyAXWlSiHyPt/s1600/Flow2+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1175" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGFiRo6h9XZpW9pkYvmsefy8RmX7MfBqLMqA-JRVKATT6COS-d5457t6hD08nI1rjd885ayGKVSzeY1Q2QMvp5iU9LnAs0ZLORCY9hP9fDYEjPbF9e-ywOFcUTPgmtJ-q1VyAXWlSiHyPt/s400/Flow2+%25282%2529.jpg" width="292" /></a></div>
Worked from the cuff down, Go With The Flow uses a super-simple yet beautiful stitch pattern that starts at the top of the leg and continues right down to the toe - even on the sole of the foot. The pattern features an afterthought heel so you don’t have to interrupt your flow to turn the heel.<br />
<br />
So relax, enjoy, and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/go-with-the-flow-4" target="_blank">Go With The Flow</a>.<br />

I had a lot of trouble choosing a word of the year for 2017. Ultimately I decided that in 2017 I would have a word of the month. As I sat writing this pattern at the beginning of March, my word of the month was ‘<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/momentum" target="_blank">Momentum</a>’; I will follow through on everything I start. I will keep going when I don’t feel like it. I will focus on my goal and work until I get there.<br />
<br />
I hope that you build and manifest <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/momentum" target="_blank">Momentum</a> in your life as you work this pattern.<br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, "Lucida Sans Unicode", "Lucida Grande", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">Karma is the Sanskrit word for action and is the spiritual equivalent of Newton’s Law of Motion, “For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction.” In other words, when we emit a positive force in thought, word, or action, that positive energy will come back to us. I feel like the world needs some good karma right now, and I’m manifesting it through my preferred creative outlet, knitting. May you manifest good karma with every stitch!</span><br />

I miss the colours of the other seasons. Of all the seasonal colour palettes, the fall colour palette is my favourite! I love the earthy hues and warm tones. <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/aster-18" target="_blank">Aster</a> was inspired by the beautiful colours of fall!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgzFA2_ZhcgH-ZpDapywZq3GmHWpnz3SvyG5434ZiMHN8UvdxZcjdegMiIuYH0WnT6OnBkxjuM7IPhlg8noq7i0s8xHyBJaKQUdgCto1wWawz7f8tUvBOna8ZPmRo0ppWPm7_NE7D06br7/s1600/aster14_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="336" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgzFA2_ZhcgH-ZpDapywZq3GmHWpnz3SvyG5434ZiMHN8UvdxZcjdegMiIuYH0WnT6OnBkxjuM7IPhlg8noq7i0s8xHyBJaKQUdgCto1wWawz7f8tUvBOna8ZPmRo0ppWPm7_NE7D06br7/s400/aster14_1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This fun sock pattern uses mosaic knitting and cables to create the Aster stitch pattern on the front of the leg and top of the foot of the socks. Slipped stitches are used to create the colourwork pattern. There is no stranded colour work and each row is knit using only one colour.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This sock features a short row heel and a rounded toe that is grafted closed with Kitchener stitch.<br />
Instructions are given to knit socks in narrow, medium, wide and extra wide widths. Foot length is customizable.<br />

In many respects, 2016 sucked for a lot of people. Globally, I don't think it will be remembered in history classes as one of the better trips around the sun. That being said, I have a lot to be grateful for and very near the top of my list is you. <br />
<br />
The fibre arts community is a fabulous community that is full of amazing and talented people and I am thankful to be part of it.<br />
<br />
I hope that 2017 is a great year for all of us and that you experience lots of love, happiness and yarn. I look forward to sharing many more knitting adventures with you in the new year. <br />
<br />

This is one of the craziest weeks of the year. In addition to all the things that have to be done in a typical week, there is a whole layer of Christmas related things to get done. <br />
<br />
It can be overwhelming. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, everything is just so much busier and more hectic right now that even the most routine tasks seem to take longer and require more patience. <br />
<br />
It doesn't help that we've had to stop everything to shovel snow several times in the past 5 days and we are having new floors installed in our basement this week (I don't know what we were thinking when we booked that). <br />
<br />
This week, I'm resolving to be extra gentle and forgiving with myself. It's ok if I purchase frozen meals for my family a few times this week. It's ok if I good to bed 1/2 and hour early with a good book. It's ok if all of the gifts aren't beautifully wrapped like all the gifts I see on Pinterest. It's ok that the kittens have destroyed our tree and there are no ornaments left on the bottom half of it. It's ok if I get a little behind with the laundry. <br />
<br />
I will make time every day this week for some mindless knitting. I will find time for a long soak in a hot bath this week. I will ask my husband and kids to help out a bit more with the housework this week. <br />
<br />
What are you doing to take care of yourself this week?<br />
<br />

This fun sock pattern uses mosaic knitting and cables to create the Beach Ball stitch pattern on the front of the leg and top of the foot of the socks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWWQXoaAX4cefD_lUqQ0bW0Lue9mEqp-zADPJTd74so2NJIhDA59sb86X4UBus2dS1dB_MJgHYkv5wUPL1Kp0Q7H9u8RDGxQU7Gpu0Slonw-QcF1d6lHD6UB20l4q4QbgcgcoavWXqtfq8/s1600/bb6_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWWQXoaAX4cefD_lUqQ0bW0Lue9mEqp-zADPJTd74so2NJIhDA59sb86X4UBus2dS1dB_MJgHYkv5wUPL1Kp0Q7H9u8RDGxQU7Gpu0Slonw-QcF1d6lHD6UB20l4q4QbgcgcoavWXqtfq8/s400/bb6_1.jpg" width="206" /></a></div>
Slipped stitches are used to create the colourwork pattern. There is no stranded colour work and each row is knit using only one colour.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The lovely people at Yarn Canada contacted me and asked me to help them spread the word about a contest they're hosting where the winner will receive a lifetime supply of sock yarn - this is totally my kind of contest, and I've already entered. <br />
<br />
They sent me this press release:<br />
<strong><br /></strong>
<strong>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE</strong><br />
<strong>Win Socks for Life! Well the yarn, you’re on your own after that.</strong><br />
(Vancouver, BC) “To be fair, it’s actually only a 25 year supply, so we can only hope the winner dies early to keep me an honest woman.” - Nikki Smith, VP YarnCanada.ca<br />
After extensive research YarnCanada.ca discovered two key issues which continue to plague the world which we’d like to help bring to an end.<br />
<ol>
<li>Some people have hobbies other than knitting (idiots)</li>
<li>Other (marginally insane) people buy socks at Costco </li>
</ol>
“With one final blow we’ll give someone years of knitting and make it so they never need to succumb to Fruit of the Loom again.” - Robert Matherson, YarnCanada.ca<br />
Don’t want to use all the yarn to make socks? That’s okay, no hard feelings.<br />
Yes, some marriages may end as the winner ignores her husband in a multi-year knitting frenzy. But that’s simply a risk we must take. On the other hand, maybe getting non-terrible socks for Christmas could bring families closer together.<br />
The prize will go to whomever can show how their life will most be changed by winning and what you will do with the prize.<br />
Anything could happen:<br />
<em>“I’ll use the yarn to start a knitting business on Etsy!” - Beth C, Winnipeg</em><br />
<em>“My friends always get together to watch The Bachelor, but goodness it’s boring, now I’ll have something to do to keep me distracted.” - Janet G, Toronto</em><br />
<em>“Honestly I have no self control. With all that yarn I’ll knit non-stop, stay up for days and miss work. I’ll get fired, not be able to pay rent and get kicked out of my apartment. But… I’d have so many socks!” - Samantha T, Vancouver</em><br />
<em>“I’ll knit them all up as fast as I can and give them to charity.” – Nicole</em><br />
<br />Whatever the reason, let us know why knitting is important to you and how a lifetime supply of sock yarn would change your life.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.yarncanada.ca/socksforlife" target="_blank">Enter to Win a Lifetime Supply of Socks</a><br />

I have a few bins of leftover sock yarn. (yes, bins - that's not a typo).<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6HChLcqWUReS7K7iRZQLvTVtZHKywwvd92qOa8MXUASoSoorVqlNWirDdw1_5xQe0oxWIGHz4k6CPJxwNBoOLeZvoKaQEFFBJ8_R-Bbe_-3Yn-xe0AqygfvOy49ZSRyvL-crmUJu6xvIl/s1600/IMG_1647.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6HChLcqWUReS7K7iRZQLvTVtZHKywwvd92qOa8MXUASoSoorVqlNWirDdw1_5xQe0oxWIGHz4k6CPJxwNBoOLeZvoKaQEFFBJ8_R-Bbe_-3Yn-xe0AqygfvOy49ZSRyvL-crmUJu6xvIl/s400/IMG_1647.JPG" width="212" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">two boxes of leftover sock yarn that I use for swatching new pattern ideas</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
Sometimes, in my head, I plan to make the most epic sock yarn blanket ever! I haven't cast it on yet, there's always too much other knitting to do. <br />
<br />
There are lots of things to do with leftover sock yarn. You could:<br />
<br />
*create a <a href="http://blog.classiceliteyarns.com/2015/03/make-your-own-ball-of-yarn.html" target="_blank">magic ball </a> and then knit all the things with it. (my magic ball would be the size of a beach ball)<br />*create a blanket of <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/generic-mitered-square-blanket" target="_blank">mitred squares</a> - these seem so popular right now. <br />*make a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-beekeepers-quilt" target="_blank">Beekeeper's Quilt</a>. (confession: I made a few of these hexipuffs then got bored so I stuffed them with cat nip gave them to my cat)<br />*make small toys or amigurumi projects.<br />*create mini skeins to trade with and gift to your yarnie friends.<br />*make cup cozies.<br />*make <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/untangled" target="_blank">earbud cozies</a>. (I really like these)<br />*make <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#sort=best&craft=knitting&query=chapstick" target="_blank">chapstick cozies</a>. (these make great keychains)<br />*<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#craft=knitting&query=yarnbombing&view=captioned_thumbs&page=1&sort=best" target="_blank">yarnbomb</a> something!<br /><ul>
</ul>
<div>
What do you do with leftover sock yarn?</div>

<br />
If, like me, you happen to live in the northern hemisphere and in a colder climate, then this is our time of year! This is when we shine! This is when we are most relevant; personally, I think we're relevant all the time, but from a mainstream societal perspective, this is definitely our season. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbfM-zdmcDnfc1EcjWK93nhDV2iAlYIByVkZ7EKHu2pS0JVKXd_7wsxCl4rGL2asvtX8xUZ4B9BmoRqRCU-G2bpKYi0vGzXAFZNrwYmM89haWdj9fGZ1XsSHssIjymqxiaGnKZAPsh52Ga/s1600/Wear+Your+Knitting%2521%2521+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbfM-zdmcDnfc1EcjWK93nhDV2iAlYIByVkZ7EKHu2pS0JVKXd_7wsxCl4rGL2asvtX8xUZ4B9BmoRqRCU-G2bpKYi0vGzXAFZNrwYmM89haWdj9fGZ1XsSHssIjymqxiaGnKZAPsh52Ga/s400/Wear+Your+Knitting%2521%2521+%25281%2529.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
It's finally chilly enough to wear all our knitted things and enjoy them and show them off and get compliments about how talented we are and and how creative we are and how beautiful our knitting is...it's all true, by the way - we're awesome! <br />
<br />
It's also the time of year when lots of us are buried under a pile of knitting projects with a deadline of December 25th. I don't knit for the holidays, but if you do, good luck and we'll see you on the other side of December. If you're hoping to surprise some people with hand knit socks, I wrote <a href="http://danagervaisdesigns.blogspot.ca/2016/03/how-to-surprise-someone-with-hand-knit.html#.WBt-LPkrLIU" target="_blank">a post a while ago that might help you out</a>.<br />
<br />
Happy knitting!<br />

Hey Knitters! <br />
<br />
It's been a while since I've blogged. I've missed talking to you! Because I miss talking to you, I'm working behind the scenes to make some changes to my business model and schedule so that I will have more time to do things I enjoy - like blogging more regularly! <br />
<br />
I'm hoping to touch base with you at least once per week (hopefully more!) so watch this space! <br />
<br />
In other news, In an effort to support indy dyers, I'm going to be using indy dyed yarns as often as possible in my designs. I've teamed up with the lovely Melanie of<a href="https://www.goknityourself.com/" target="_blank"> Go Knit Yourself</a> to offer a coupon code to all of her customers. With any purchase of her scrumptious yarn, you will get a coupon code for a 25% discount on any pattern in my <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/stores/dana-gervais-designs" target="_blank">Ravelry Store.</a> Her yarns are beautiful. A sampling of her sock weight yarn can be <a href="https://www.goknityourself.com/collections/fingering" target="_blank">found here</a>. <br />

In other news...<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/spf-30" target="_blank">SPF 30</a> has been released into the world!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjNInuJABKwoyJ4IhiVmG6FGR704N-DQmHqxql9IPNVIMlHYNz2pS84EIETcBpSngWk3MSsbv8R7KZ2IZUthxHT-YsevaCcPn8j0aGAbSaS-oxrwkYUIq1Vo4wnJFBNL_Q92o67xiZStmX/s1600/SPF306.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="340" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjNInuJABKwoyJ4IhiVmG6FGR704N-DQmHqxql9IPNVIMlHYNz2pS84EIETcBpSngWk3MSsbv8R7KZ2IZUthxHT-YsevaCcPn8j0aGAbSaS-oxrwkYUIq1Vo4wnJFBNL_Q92o67xiZStmX/s400/SPF306.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This pattern was mostly knit by the lake during a very hot summer week. Between knitting<br />
rounds on the sock, I would apply Sunscreen to my kids and myself. It became a joke on the dock that the fibre content of my sock should include SPF30. Considering the very bright yellow of the yarn, this seemed like the perfect name for this design.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmRSpKWrMcQ98lB3xwYViB0bryf0pIBzyayH2ayFY8j4-hTrU1v7r6RZjKUdpDt7ojWipthiYXHmFXjCQlkxhQImzS-RfeSpnWQuc8nHivlc_k1BTVLqcEAw_aUM1gW5sYfzoZ5Vjq_-hb/s1600/spf303.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmRSpKWrMcQ98lB3xwYViB0bryf0pIBzyayH2ayFY8j4-hTrU1v7r6RZjKUdpDt7ojWipthiYXHmFXjCQlkxhQImzS-RfeSpnWQuc8nHivlc_k1BTVLqcEAw_aUM1gW5sYfzoZ5Vjq_-hb/s400/spf303.jpg" width="245" /></a></div>
SPF 30 is worked from the top down starting with a picot cast on. The simple 2 row lace<br />
pattern is on the front and back of the leg and continues onto the heel flap. The heel is<br />
worked as a half handkerchief heel. The lace pattern continues on the instep and top of the foot while the sole is worked in stockinette. The sock ends with a wedge toe that is grafted closed using Kitchener Stitch.<br />
